Lihue: The Crown of the Garden Isle
Bordered by Hanamaulu to the north and Puhi to the west, Lihue, HI sits on the eastern side of the island of Kauai. The county seat of Kauai County, Hawaii, United States, Lihue is a census-designated place and the second largest town on the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi after Kapaʻa. As of the 2010 census, this city that when directly translated means "cold chill" in the Hawaiian language, is home to some 6,455 residents. The economic development of Lihue can be attributed to the rise of the sugar industry in the 1800s, especially after a larger sugar mill was built. Lihue eventually shifted to become the central city of the island. The town hosts the county administration building; Kauai's biggest shopping center, Kukui Grove Center, Macy's; and several popular stores including K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Costco. There are also numerous car dealerships, hotels, and reputable restaurants. The town's aviation needs are served by Lihue Airport.
